Tumai Ora Whānau Services

Tumai Ora loosely translates as ‘taking a stand for the best.’ We provide Whānau Ora services across East and North Otago. Our key objective is to ensure that Māori have better access to existing health and social service providers, which means working with whānau to help them access these services, and working with providers to build relationships and improve service delivery.

We support whānau by developing health and wellbeing plans, and checking in regularly to make sure their needs are met. Our services include:

Whānau Ora Navigation
One-on-one sessions with whānau
Provision of health information and resources
Access to health and social services
Home visits – kanohi ki te kanohi
Regular check ins and ongoing support

We have a high priority focus on supporting whānau with the following challenges:

Diabetes, Asthma, Hearing, Immunisation, Smoking, Injury, Drugs, Alcohol, Oral health.

Question 2

TPK Essential & Critical Repairs

We work in partnership with Te Puni Kōkiri to improve the quality of housing for Māori communities. The aim is to connect whānau who have housing repair needs, such as insulation and heating, with local builders and suppliers. We are currently focused on the East Otago region, and our role is to identify and complete home assessments for whānau who are connected with Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, or referred to us through Tumai Ora Whānau Services.

Our home assessments look at how warm, safe and dry homes are. If any repairs are required, Aukaha applies for funding from Te Puni Kōkiri. Whānau must meet certain criteria defined by Te Puni Kōkiri, such as having a community services card and being the owner/occupier of the home, or living in a whānau-owned house.

Question 3

Otago Homes Energy Retrofit Programme

The Aukaha team are delivering this pilot programme, where we have a passion to improve outcomes for all homeowners in need.

The programme criteria is simple. To be eligible you need:
1. To be an Otago resident;
2. To own your own home;
3. To have a Community Services Card or have another way to verify low income.

What we do:
First we receive your referral and then we conduct a Home Performance Assessment to find out the condition of your home and what needs doing. We then prepare a scope of works, which we can then undertake at no cost to you if you agree to improve your home. The type of work we can do is:
A). Warmer Kiwi Homes (ceiling and underfloor insulation and clean heat);
B). Critical repairs, i.e. fix a window, leaky roof, plumbing or drainage problem;
C). Additional features like curtains, LED light bulbs, cylinder wrap, mechanical extraction fans. Homes that have already received the Warmer Kiwi Homes interventions are still eligible for this programme as we go above and beyond Warmer Kiwi Homes.

The timeframe is short – this pilot must be complete by December 2023, so the sooner you get in touch, the easier it is for us to get the work done and you won’t miss out. We want this programme not only to benefit those who receive upgrades but also to help shape the replacement national Warmer Kiwi Homes programme and ensure energy wellbeing throughout the motu. Our mission to help everyone into healthy homes, reduce emissions and to be socially and environmentally responsible in all we do as we adapt to our changing climate. We want to hear from you!

Healthy Homes Initiative

The Aukaha Healthy Homes Initiative works with whānau, agencies and local partners to provide education and access to interventions which will create warm, dry and healthy homes.

Cold, damp, crowded homes can increase the risk of respiratory issues and other preventable health conditions, such as rheumatic fever and skin infections. There is strong evidence, nationally and internationally, of improved health outcomes resulting from warmer and drier homes.

We identify eligible families, working with them to carry out a comprehensive housing assessment and complete an individualised action plan to create a warmer, drier, healthier home.

Through our support, families are able to access the change they need to create a better living environment, especially for their tamariki. The changes include help with accessing insulation, curtains, beds, bedding, minor repairs, floor coverings, ventilation, heating sources, full and correct entitlement assessments through Work and Income, support with power bills, and finding alternative accommodation as needed.

Aukaha Drive

This is a two day-course helping participants to gain the knowledge required to sit their learner driver license test. For this, we’re partnering with the New Zealand Police, Ministry of Social Development and the New Zealand Automobile Association (AA). The course is culturally based and tailored for all learning styles, (including one on one support), with continual support through to restricted and full licence.

Aukaha Drive aims remove the barriers that people face trying to navigate life without a drivers license (such as potential employment) and builds on our continuing work ensuring that the right supports are in place for people to gain the correct driving permit in order to avoid penalties or infringements.

We can help with:

Payment for eye tests
Getting access to required ID
Transport to license testing
Driver mentoring
Provision of a vehicle for practical license tests

Our workshops are held onsite at the AA. When participants have finished their two-day workshop, the learner license test can be taken immediately while all the information is fresh.

Jobs for Nature

Maintaining the Gains

Working with QEII National Trust, Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Otago Regional Council, we aim to target invasive pest plant species, and regenerate native varieties across 1400 hectares of QEII Covenanted land around Coastal Dunedin over the next three years.

Since the project was launched at the start of 2023, our team have been systematically working with land owners with visible results.

The project is funded by DOC through the Jobs for Nature programme - designed to create jobs while enhancing te taiao. We currently have a team of three full-time rangers with future scope for growth.

Whiria te Waitaki

The focus of Whiria te Waitaki is to enhance māhika kai in the Waitaki Valley, with an emphasis on improving the health of the Waitaki River. The biosecurity and biodiversity objectives are designed with the aim of delivering positive eco-cultural outcomes.

Led by Te Rūnanga o Moeraki, this project is not just about environmental restoration. It is also restoring mana whenua presence in their takiwā with the visibility of whānau kaimahi out in the community and the whenua.

Work is taking place on Crown land in the Waitaki region across two culturally significant sites. Kaiaka taiao (indegenious rangers) undertake pest control and monitoring, and flora and fauna restoration. The project enables employment and training with positive benefits for the environment and whānau.

The project name Whiria Te Waitaki, means braid together the Waitaki. It is a play on words, and a reference not just to the distinctive braids of the awa, but also the way the project brings together the linked elements of water, land and people.

We’re proud to support Te Rūnanga o Moeraki acting as administrators for this project, with Toitū Te Whenua – Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) as funding partners through the Jobs for Nature programme.

Become a Construction Apprentice

Mana Takata is collaborating with training providers to support Māori and Pasifika develop a career in the construction sector. We have established an apprenticeship and pastoral care scheme in the Otago region that offers a high level of support to trainees. Our aim is to ensure apprentices are successful and that they are exposed to opportunities to learn new skills and further their careers.

Procurement – linking Māori and Pasifika businesses with sector partners

Through our Mana Takata team, Aukaha acts as a facilitator linking Māori and Pasifika businesses with other businesses in our region who want to enhance supplier diversity for positive social outcomes.

We maintain two databases, the first of which is made up of Māori and Pasifika business owners operating in the Otago region. These businesses are all available to support local construction or development projects, and include a wide range of services from landscaping and plumbing through to catering and labouring.

The second database is made up of companies who are interested in working with Aukaha to deliver better outcomes for the Māori and Pasifika community. These are businesses that need the skills and services of others and who want to improve their supplier diversity for positive social outcomes.
