Aukaha is a mana whenua-owned consultancy delivering social, economic, environmental, and cultural services across the takiwā of our five papatipu rūnaka shareholders: Te Rūnanga o Waihao, Te Rūnanga o Moeraki, Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, and Hokonui Rūnanga.

We started life as Kāi Tahu ki Otago Natural Resource Management Limited or KTKO in the late nineties and changed our name to Aukaha in 2017 to better reflect the range and breadth of our consultancy services and expertise.

Our name comes from a traditional Kāi Tahu chant, recited by our tīpuna as they tightened the lashings of their waka before setting out on a journey - Kia kaha, au kaha – unite and bind together. 

The Aukaha team works with people across Otago providing a range of services that will help make ours a better place to be. This includes a range of initiatives that will link our communities together, providing shared understanding and enhanced benefits for us all.

We have four pou that we work across:

• Mana Ahurea - Translation services, cultural workshops, public art and cultural narratives
• Mana Aukaha - Human Resources, finances, administration
• Mana Taiao - Resource management and planning on behalf of Kāi Tahu as a Treaty Partner
• Mana Takata - Trade training for Māori and Pasifika; Social procurement; Health services

A governance board with representation from each of the Rūnaka manages the business.

Aukaha has protocols with the Otago Regional Council and all district councils in Otago, which set out the process for facilitating Kāi Tahu engagement in the councils’ resource consent and plan change processes.

Aukaha has significant relationships with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Ngāi Tahu Property and Tourism, local government, tertiary sector and our Treaty partners in the Otago region. Our partners all have a strong commitment to the delivery of enhanced social outcomes, and we work in collaboration to deliver unique and far ranging results. Our programmes include facilitation of supplier/contractor diversity and trade training in a range of sectors.
