Book launch - Ka Runaka Expectations for Oil and Gas Companies - 10th Aug 2017

Book launch - Ka Runaka Expectations for Oil and Gas Companies Ka Runaka Expectations for Oil and Gas Companies in East Otago

On Wednesday 9th August 2017, a powhiri was held at Puketeraki Marae to launch the new Runaka publication "Ka Runaka Expectations for Oil and Gas Companies in East Otago".

Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki and Te Runanga o Otakou developed the document that outlines their expectations of on-shore and off-shore oil and gas explorers in their region.  The guideline sets out the conditions where runaka are likely to oppose oil and gas activities, and the conditions where runaka may deem activity possible.   The document also outlines how engagement with runaka should take place.  It identifies Treaty of Waitangi and legislative obligations that oil and gas developers must follow and includes sections on international good practice.

Flow requirements for Water Takes - 30th Jan 2017

The Otago Regional Council (ORC) is changing the Water Plan to improve how they assess the amount of water that should remain in a waterbody when water is taken out for use.

Currently when ORC considers an application to take water, the Water Plan requires an assessment of whether a 'residual flow' is required.   If so, this can be included as a condition of the water permit (a 'residual flow' is a quantity of water that must be left in the river at the point where water is taken).  When setting residual flow condition on a water permit, the ORC must consider the effects on aquatic ecosystems and natural character of the water body.

The review looks at how these flow requirements are considered in applications to take water under the Water Plan, and how we apply related conditions on any Water Permit the ORC grants.  The review could affect those who:

  • hold a water permit to take water (it will have an expiry date and may have a review condition, and you may wish to renew your permit in the future)
  • may need to apply for a water permit in the future
  • are interested in waterbodies or the flor/fauna that call them home.

The ORC are holding Drop-in Sessions to hear any issues you may have with the current system, and your opinions and ides on how to make them work better, so go along to their public sessions and talk to them.

Sessions are 1pm - 3pm and 6.30pm - 8.00pm (except Dunedin finishes at 7.30pm)
